Dunno how old you are, but it could be that the 5 years takes you past a nominal retirement age? Your income is therefore dependent on your pension, any widow's pension you may get, plus state pension. Adding in that you're not a home owner, and the bank may get twitchy.
Alternatively, it's simply a commercial decision - you're not their target customer, they don't think they'll make much profit out of you or can't cross-sell you anything else, or they've hit their sales targets for the month and aren't offering them to anyone who's anything less than completely spotless... ultimately it's their decision and you have no right to borrow money from them.
Therefore, unless there are any previously unknown gremlins in your credit history from all of the CRAs, you'll never know the reason, so there's no point worrying about it.0 -

why are you not bothered? Any default can and will limit your credit options, including a mortgage.
If it's not your debt, then take steps to get it off. First step if file a dispute with Equifax. Next step would potentially be talking to the company to find out why they got your details...0 -

Let's just hope that the water company doesn't go to court for a CCJ before the 6 years are up.0 -

This sounds like a bad idea. Something has happened, and it has been registered as a blot against your name. I'd want to know what and why; as well as being worried that they could escalate it to court and it become a CCJ.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -

You most definitely should dispute it, it has already impacted you in that you have been unable to get a very small loan! Do you want to be declined for anything else you apply for?I'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards.
