External shutters for windows?

Anyone know of a good product for blocking sunlight from the outside of your windows? I need something that is roll down, folds to the side or even removable and refixable with a few bolts.
It's only for the really hot days. The internal blinds don't keep enough heat out of my living room. It's quite a big window, about 6ft wide and 5ft tall.
Last year I resorted to using greenhouse paint, my neighbours think I'm a nutter.
It doesn't need to look good, just cheap and functional.
I've been searching and searching for shutters and shades, but just get swamped with internal blinds etc.

You mean one of those things that look a bit like a tent when extended? Not so keen on that.
Would like it if there was one that could just be drawn down over the windowChanging the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -
Have you considered UV blocking film? According to this advert:
https://www.sunsibility.co.uk/shop/uv-window-filter-film/uv-window-filter-film/67/0/1230/bonwyke-sun-protective-elite-uv-window-film-fade-and-heat-reduction/
it blocks up to 52% of heat from the sun.
It's quite expensive but there may be other cheaper suppliers for similar products.0 -
I would assume there are few products which would close down over the window on the outside, as it would prevent the window from opening. The wind down awnings do work well, and the shady area they create underneath mean you might get some cooler air circulating if you open the windows too.0

Anyone know how much a simple awning would cost? One that you wind out with folding arms ?Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0

Do you think you need planning permission for external shutters or roller blinds?Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0

You could look at some external roller shutters, like the ones they use extensively in Spain (called "persianas" there). Also known as continental shutters.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
Plantation shutters. I love the idea of external shutters. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I've been looking for these continental shutters also but have only found them on sale to commercial premesis. You may need planning permission. For me it would be worth it! You can get internal blinds which fit flush in a track to either side of the window, but my windows are the wrong shape.0
