British Gas sold set to lowell

Hi,

7 months ago ago we put an offer on our first house and I was advised to check my credit file. To my horror there was a default from British Gas for £2,500 from a 1 bed flat that I had lived in 5 years previously.

I was never chased for the debt and am convinced that there was an error. I contacted them and they ignored my questions and I explained there would have been a mistake. After 3 emails they failed to reply to me.

We’ve moved into the house so am not so worried about my credit file now but I’m very annoyed that this debt has been passed on to a debt company.

What are my options?

I’ve read that these companies will take a settlement figure with a big discount. I’m happy to pay 10% or 20% just to get the stress of this debt out the way.

Do I just ignore Lowell? The default was due to drop of my file January 2019.

Can Lowell effect my credit report with this? If they refuse a settlement and I can’t prove this debt wasn’t mine, will a repayment plan go on my file?

Thanks
