I've decided to go ahead and open an account, but having problems.

I have completed the first page of the application, I then click the button to continue, and I just get a popup that says '90074', and taken back to the first screen. I have completed all fields, and all are correct.

Anyone else tried to apply and have a problem ?

    Thanks
    Daniel

I was having the same problem when I tried to apply on line. That was through Internet Explorer. Then I thought I would try using Netscape and there was no problem at all.

They have now accepted my application and wanted me to send them a cheque by post for a minimum of £1.00 as an opening deposit. I now realise that unlike ING Direct, they do not have a Freepost address! So unless you are going to put a substantial amount in, the cost of a stamp and an envelope is likely to outweigh the extra interest gained on this account, after tax deducted, compared with A&L Online Saver, AA Internet Savings, etc.

I think I am now having second thoughts about them.

Surely once the account is open though, you can just pay in by transfer ?

    Thanks

I received an email accepting my application but I have to send them a cheque by post for a minimum of £1.00 as an opening deposit. However if, like me, you have an online, "no cheque book" current account then it is not possibe to send them a cheque. It looks like they won't accept an application if you can't comply with this requirement so that's one potential customer "lost" to ICICI.

I had the same problem with ING (IIRC). But I don't think you should blame the bank; governments have placed huge restrictions on what banks can do citing money laundering and terrorism.
I keep an account with a cheque book for just such occasions.

I had an account with ICICI bank and their customer service is absolutely rubbish.
They have not responded to any queries for OVER a year now and since I would like to have a new PIN,have written and telephoned god knows how many times, but they just dont give a damn.
I wouldnt take this trouble for an extra 0.2%(or whatever small percentage).
Also customer service in India is next to nonexistent and I wouldnt be surprised if the same happened here.
In effect I have a debit card which I cant use because they havent responded to my requests for a new PIN and since the account hasnt been used ,they have been charging hefty inactivity charges and now I have lost almost all the money I had in it.
Pls stay clear of this bank if you do not want unpleasant experiences

Haven't they just recently started operations in the UK? Are you referring to an Indian account?

But BCCI was a fraud, wasn't it? And, I think the only banking fraud in the UK. (I'm ignoring Barings here as I think that was rescued and depositors didn't lose any money).

And much of today's regulation was a reaction to prevent another BCCI. If a bank is licensed in the UK, it has to comply with the FSA. I guess the answer is not to deposit more than £30k which, IIRC, is the amount covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
