Paying workmen

Hi
Unsure if I'm posting this in the right section and if not, can Mods move to the right topic in this forum My house is in need of essential repairs and I am going to be enlisting some workmen from most of the trades - builders, window fitters, roofers etc. I was wondering what would be the best way to pay them that offers me protection just in case anything doesn't go as smoothly as I want it to. Now I am aware of Section 50 however most of the workmen don't accept credit cards and only accept cash or bank transfer. Any advice appreciated as I am going to be spending thousands of pounds.

I have no problem with paying cash - if it's only a small amount.
If you pay cash for a big value - make sure at the very least that the estimate from them is sign against paid in full.
Some do have portable card readers though yes it is rare - I did one recently for Double-glazing deposit.
Otherwise it's either cheque or Bank Transfer (BACS) - as long as you do internet banking. For peace of mind send a small amount first and get that acknowledged - so you know you are doing it right and it's going to the right place! The problem with cheques - when can they get to somewhere to pay it in - then days for it to clear.
How long will the work take? Several weeks and £10k+ could justify phased payments, otherwise, on completion - when you're happy.I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0 -
Whatever you do, make sure you're completely happy before parting with the final payment. Years ago I had problems with the builder on our kitchen refurb, told them in writing what still remained outstanding, returned their final invoice and referred them to my previous letter, they did not complete the work so I did not pay the final £3k and, after a bit of a fight (as we'd taken care of the outstanding items) they wrote off the amount and cancelled the invoice!0

I always try to pay by cc for the protection but if that wasn't an option then probably by cheque and if all else fails bank transfer. I just like a 'paper' trail proving that they've received their money.
I just had windows replaced and I also wasn't required to pay a deposit, all paid on completion. Used a local independent fitters.0 -
