CCTV and GDPR

CCTV is not a new subject to Data Protection but the new GDPR raises some new issues.

Does that mean that all the petrol stations who use CCTV to monitor the forecourt and their shop areas and have monitors at the cashdesk will have to remove them ?

Those that have any perceivable risk of a customer seeing the images might wish to reposition them I should think, if they're behind the counter facing only authorised staff or at one of those security booths then a customer would have to be in an authorised area to view them.

All of our local buses had screens showing live security footage of the interior of the whole bus the last time I looked. I'll keep an eye out to see what they do going forward, if they haven't already changed them.

You seem to have got this quote from a blog, rather than the law itself. It's an opinion, and given the nature of the website on which it appears, I suspect they have a vested interest in selling their consultancy services.

Personally, I cannot see that showing a live CCTV feed of a visible area has any privacy implications. It cannot invade your privacy to have your image shown on a screen if you can be seen anyway.

It's not a data protection breach if the area covered by the camera is visible from the screen location and it's only viewed live.

If recorded footage is viewed, or the screen shows something that wouldn't be seen by a member of the public at that location, then there's probably a breach.
