Ford Mondeo zetec diesel tdci, any ideas what it could be?

Hi guys my cousin went out this morning in the car to the shops and then came back. He went to go out again and the car wouldn't start. He doesn't have a battery charger available for the moment.

Do you think the car would need a replacement battery? He has had it since 2010 and hasn't needed a new battery for all that time. He's tried starting it twice and all to no avail.

There are no signs on the dashboard that point to a battery problem, so seems a bit odd.

When you say "won't start", describe how it won't start...

Is the starter turning the engine at normal speed, but it won't catch?
Is the starter turning the engine very slowly?
Is the starter not turning the engine at all?
    Do lights etc still work?
Has he tried jump starting it?

Mine is a January 2010 model, had to change mine in November. My previous MK3 Mondeo battery failed around the same age. It should however show a "Low Battery" warning message on the speedo info panel. It could be an immobiliser issue.

  • A favourite trick of the Mk3 and Mk4 Mondeo is to flash lots of warning lights on the dashboard when the battery is in a low state of charge.

Has this been noticed? And an 8 year old battery is probably due for renewal anyway, even if just for peace of mind.

Check the battery voltage. Nobody here can realistically diagnose it
