If the pressure keeps dropping it has a fault, either a leak somewhere or a fault with the expansion vessel. If its the expansion vessel it will be very low when the boiler is off and get to 2 -2.5 when on and maybe trip the pressure release valve.
The filling loop is exactly what you describe, you have to turn on both knobs to fill the system.
Unless its a condensing boiler I can't think of any strange gasses you could smell. A gas safety certificate includes checking the fumes, flue and safety of the whole system and MUST be done annually and copied to tenant.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Low boiler pressure will not have anything to do with smells or affect your breathing. You could get boiler fumes coming in through an open window, door or vent.
Radiator water often does have a pungent metallic smell if it is dirty. If a radiator is leaking on carpet it could cause smells.
The 2 black knobs with the flexi pipe is how you increase the pressure in the system, open the one at the boiler fully and gently ease the other one whilst watching the gauge. Bleeding the radiators will reduce the pressure in the system.0 -
