Look, you need to weigh up your options, or you're going to drive yourself crazy with doubting this and that and being worried. Whats the worst that could happen? You've lived amongst social housing before so if you're like me, you've probably seen the worst that can exist on an estate. But, this is not an estate, its only one street or cul de sac of social housing.
It's eleven properties in total with most going to be families with young kids. Try having 60 properties of social housing and then seeing if it's the same, it won't be.
New builds have regulations on the estates that they do enforce. Within days of my best friend moving into hers she was given a notice for her partner to remove his white van from the estate as it wasn't allowed. They do push these things for sure.
Lastly, I forgot to mention, with these new houses as well, they changed the tenancy rules. Before you used to get a lifetime tenancy, in my area of North Devon, they get a rolling tenancy now with that being on a trial for 12 months. This is designed to make it a lot easier to get rid of people if they cause problems and breach tenancy agreements. I would guess that this is a national thing now, as they have spent money on these new builds, and they want them to be looked after.
I'd say, make the most of these investments while you can, especially if its the only way to get your foot on the ladder. It's really not going to be that bad, me and you are products of social housing, and we are not that bad!0 -

I do agree with your sentiments. I think what is hard for me, is I have saved furiously and do now have a sizeable deposit. I am SO close to being able to do this on my own without Shared Ownership, but don't know if I should take the gable and wait to see if I can outright own a property, or just take the plunge and get a shared ownership property. As such, I am really, really keen to make sure I buy somewhere I know I will not lose anything on.
But you are right, it is a step on the ladder, and we are both products of social housing! I lived in a council estate with my mum for 28 years, and then housing association private rent for three years until now. I am getting on and need to buy somewhere desperately.0 -

Excuse me whilst my head struggles to fit out of the door.
In all seriousness, might be worth visiting a mortgage adviser and seeing if it can be done. I do think shared ownership schemes are good though, and really do help people get on in life0
