 I have only just realised when my annual renewals have came in that I have actually had 2 house insurance policies going for the last year. Both were being paid by direct debit and I didn't realise....Is there anyway I can get a refund on one as obviously I didn't mean to be paying for 2

Either, both insurers should return 50% of the premium, or you should contact the insurer for the policy that started later, explain the problem and they may agree to treat the policy as 'Not Taken Up' and refund the money.
They will be less likely to agree to this if the policies have been running for longer than a year, and they may only refund back to the renewal date.0
