Inherited disabled parking bays.

We don't drive, but we are slightly curious over this.

About six houses away, there used to be a driver that was disabled. He paid for white line and a metal plate which is fixed to their wall, his wife is disabled too and has limited walking. Whilst he was alive, it served them well. However, since he died a few years ago there is no car.

We notice that others who are disabled that live in the area, have "cottoned on" to this seemingly not needed parking place and they now vie for it.

It makes me wonder, if the lady were to move, that "reserved" place would remain presumably.

Coincidently, when we moved to a house several years ago, we inherited something similar, white line, painted "disabled", dropped kerb to drive. Equally my wife is disabled (officially) so felt comfortable about keeping the line etc. But since moving ourselves, , the new owner who is non-disabled, has inherited her own private parking place. Yes she has the dropped kerb/drive access, but somehow, it seems odd that this is allowed. In time, it could be that there are possibly hundred of inherited private parking places when property has been bought with this facility.

The disabled space can be used by any disabled driver for their own benefit or that of a disabled passenger.

Council will paint disabled bays outside houses here but they don't have a TRO or a sign up on the wall/pole. I assume if the person no longer requires it they just scrub the paint off.

On the other hand, anyone who is disabled will use them if visiting a neighbour etc much to the dismay of the bay "owner" who think it's "their" private bay.

We've got one on our road from an old disabled space, no longer used and paint is slowly fading, everyone uses it as there is no longer a need for it. There is no sign. I'd quite like to have bays put in because there is such bad parking at times e.g. a gap that 2 cars would fit in being taken by 1 car parking in the middle

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Does such a bay have any legal standing? I don't believe so.

Unless you sit there watching them parking 24/7/365 how do you know that the car parked in the middle when you came across it wasn't actually parked reasonably close to whatever was in front or behind it when it parked up?

If there’s no TRO you don’t need to be disabled to use one.

I know that but why risk damage to your car by some self entitled barely disabled motability driver... That's a whole other thread. :)

I'm talking about going out in the evening with neighbours cars in position, come back, still identical position but someone has stuck a car in the middle taking up 2 spaces

Nah but it's psychological to encourage people to go inside the box. The road is fine for parking as we have 1 row of houses on one side and just gardens on the other but some people do leave huge gaps when they park taking up enough space they stop 2 cars parking in a big gap, so when people have friends over you do end up having to park a little walk away if they're not parking well
