Well overdue | CCTV SARs and 25th May 2018 (GDPR) introduction

Currently a CCTV SAR request is up to 40days for a response and many CCTV commercial or stores or banks recordings are only 30days prior to being recorded over therefore deleting the previous 30days (Well that's my understanding)
This means should a SAR request processing start on day 31 onwards, it's too late for the requester.
The new CCTV SAR rules (starting Fri 25th May 2018) will reduce response times from 40 to 30days; matching the video recording timing.
Yay!
Sadly, I've been caught out twice with CCTV recordings been deleted because of getting the run around with being able to access it and so the recordings are no longer available by the time my request are officially accepted
The latest run around is with Barclays as a Barclaycard customer.
They responded by post to my CCTV SAR request wanting more information on Day 34 (a Tuesday) and I received their letter on Day 37 (a Friday)
Yup!
The CCTV 30day deadline had passed
With this new CCTV SAR ruling coming under the GDPR regulation, cases like mine should be elimated.
Even more vexing for me though was learning that there is no guarantee that a CCTV request will be successful.
None of the Barclays reps told me this when I was querying how and where to send my SAR request and yeah I can see what they mean now especially when they reply by post from day 31 onwards and sending their response letter 2nd class too
Roll on Friday 25th May 2018!

In over 45 years of having a bank account, i have never needed to ask for CCTV images. Am i doing something wrong ?0

How will this help if the data holder decides to only keep the cctv record for, say, seven days?
Or are you telling us that there is some legislation that all cctv owners need to keep data for thirty days?
I thought one of the principles of data protection was to only keep data as long as necessary.0 -

You really think free SARs are a good thing?
Of all the short-sighted decisions, abolishing the fee really takes the biscuit.
Every mischief-making attention-seeking timewaster will be making a list of all the organizations they may have dealings with and applying to them all 'just because they can'.
I really would like to be proved wrong.0 -
I'm pretty sure than a month was only ever a finger-in-the-air recommendation by CCTV installers.
OP as your whole point hinges on the fact that CCTV images are always kept exactly 31 days do you have information that there is now some legislation to advise banks (and come to that bars, councils and companies) that they need to 1) keep images a minimum of 31 days and/or 2) delete images after 31 days?
GDPR is vague about almost everything in respect of time frames and uses woolly words like "reasonable" and "legitimate interest".0 -
Lots of companies get round the law by leaving the request in an in tray and just forgetting about it for the required amount of time. This will not change that.0

I am going to cut up all my bank cards just to be safe. Tin hats don't work!0

We use a CCTV for security.
30 days of recording is not always practical.
Most CCTV recorders these days have a hard drive of limited capacity. How long they store for depends of the number of cameras and the sophistication of the recorder. In a simple system of 6 cameras the recorder will overwrite in half the time of a 3 camera system - if the system is a movement only one then the length of the recording will be longer than one that records consistently.Never pay on an estimated bill. Well done for replying to an 8 month old thread.0 -
