Yes an employer can reject an application for many reasons as long as they don't come under discrimination legislation. Any unexplained gap is likely to raise a red flag, but stating 'unemployed' should prevent that happening.0

Even though I have job centre letters to back it up0

They don't need a reason as there not obliged to employ anyone if they don't want to:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one

What industry are you trying for?
Or is this hypothetical thread?
As I can't see anyone being to funny with you for volunteering. And surely the volunteering organisation would and should provide a reference in the very least for your endeavours. I would certainly hope it isn't much to ask of them.
I know round here a loan company specifically works with the very long term unemployed. I think it's far more preferable to them to actually end up rather not with someone from employment with gaps so see it can go in your favour.0 -
I just shortlisted for 2 new team members and I rejected the ones that had long or repeated unexplained gaps. Had they said, I was volunteering, bringing up kids, unwell or even in prison, I'd have been more likely to invite them in. Not working for long periods can give the impression you are lazy or unreliable so always explain what you were doing.
Before my current job I was a volunteer manager. I provided several references for volunteers who then found paid work. 2 volunteers were taken on by our organization as paid start too. Volunteers can sometimes have just as many skills and responsibilities as paid staff.0 -
As volunteers better then0

Or they might just have rejected you because your written English is extremely poor.
What on earth does this mean? It makes no sense whatsoever:Frugalsim56 wrote: »As volunteers better then0 -
Just explain why you have the gap. Just say unemployed/volunteer. It's a rare person who doesn't have some kind of gap. If you don't explain, it looks like your hiding something like a spell in prison. You don't get rejected for being unemployed, just for failing to explain that you are unemployed.0
