Green Star Energy

Just tried to transfer from them as I'm in the 50 day period prior to contract end and they've just sent an email saying they've objected to my transfer because there is money outstanding and I will incur a fee as I'm still within the contract. In the past when I've transferred the outstanding balance has always been paid as the account was closing, so are they able to charge me for early transfer, and does MSE have anything to say about this?

You need to pay your outstanding bill and then initiate transfer before the supplier issues another bill. You will then receive a final bill from the supplier while commencing your new contract.

Of course they can charge you for early transfer if that is what the contract says. There is no standard rule based on what has happened in the past.

YOu are free to leave from 49 days before your contract ends. Note day 49 and not day 50. If you applied to move on the 50th day before and your new company notified them on this day, then they are able to charge you.

With regards to the debt, if a debt is still outstanding after 30 days of being billed, then energy companies can refuse the switch.
