The transaction fee on a debit card should be the same no matter if it's £100 or £10,000.

    is it not a percentage?

I have bought several new cars on a debit card, admittedly from the same main dealer. No issues at all with paying by card on collection.

It sounds like the dealer in question is being awkward. Would you pay for a kitchen or sofa by bank transfer in advance? Car dealers are just as likely to vanish into thin air.
  • Having worked in an accounts dept of a main dealer in days gone by, anyone who wanted to pay a deposit by cc was fine...the balance of a brand new car on cc wasn't because of the charges.

Anyone who wanted to pay the balance by debit card (regardless of how the deposit was paid) again was fine as was a bank transfer.

If the balance was paid by cash (and yes we did have some!) then the customer would have to wait whilst a) the salesman counted it and then b) us - if they were on the ball they'd get us to count it first in front of the customer but then you'd have money laundering issues to take care of.

Woe betide a salesman who let a car go without checking with us first that a transfer had been made & cleared
