How were you making this payment?

    Who said you couldn't?

    The 'machine'.
I was paying online as I always do.

    So, computer says "No"

That's not what I'd call a telling off.

If you use "Pay My Credit Card" while logged in to the credit card, it will not allow an overpayment.

If you make a faster payment from your current account, an overpayment would be possible.

Oh dear. I should have typed 'telling off' instead?
I have often rounded up before when paying the credit card in full.
This is the first time I have received a refusal.

No, there's nothing wrong with your grammar. A telling off is what you get when you've been told off. It's just that I don't think you can be told off by a computer like you could be told off by a parent, or a teacher.

Perhaps on previous occasions there have been purchases after the statement date that have prevented your balance from going below zero, so overpayment was permitted.
