BT extra £2.50 a quarter for non Direct Debit payments

Is this still legal?

I though that there was an EU directive brought in in January stating that whatever way you paid for something it should be the same?

Wasn't this the reason that E.ON gave for their latest price rises?

Are you referring to the ban on credit/debit card surcharges. If so it doesn't apply to DD.

I think the way BT (and others) package it is that it is a discount for paying by DD, as opposed to extra for not paying by DD.

What is your objection to DD? It's cheaper for you and for the provider.

It's not me. It's my Father.

He does not trust DDs or card payments after an insurance company and unauthorized "auto renewal" payment being taken.

Auto-renewal has nothing to do with DD.
If he insists on quarterly billing and no DD then he will have to pay the extra.
If he does the same for gas and electricity, then it is likely that he is paying several hundred a year more than he needs to, since the vast majority of competitive fixed tariffs require monthly DD payment.
Explain this to him, and about the DD guarantee.

If he had not cancelled the auto renewal then it was not unauthorised.

They offer line rental plus with some bundled extras or free on BT basic if he so qualifies?

If it's just for contact, a basic O2/3 mobile can work out cheaper at 3p per minute - if he is comfortable with mobiles.

Otherwise, there is nothing stopping him from paying before the bill is generated and then no Direct Debit is collected.

BT charge for non DD is £6.00 a quarter as it is hidden in line rental plus. The £2.50 is for a paper bill.
