Anyone thinking of retiring abroad or long winter holidays abroad?

Our plan is perhaps different to others as we plan to go somewhere colder for winter! Well sort of. We have a ski apartment in a lovely little ski resort France which we will use a lot. We are 6 or 7 years away but my wife and I have discussed this already and broadly plan our retirement to be:
- Jan to mid April spend the ski season as the apartment. Apart from the cost of season ski passes this is actually quite low cost as we have our own gear and self cater. It’s home from home really
- Mid April to mid July spend in the UK with a week or two cycling in Majorca. Plan is to downsize and keep a flat in the UK somewhere like Bournemouth
- Mid July to end Aug back at the apartment as a base for cycling in the Alps. We spend a few weeks there in summer already and it’s wonderful
- Early Sept to mid Dec long term let somewhere warm like Tenerife and occasionally somewhere further afield like NZ where by brother lives or Oz where we lived for a couple of years
- UK for Christmas then repeat the above
Just got to keep fit and healthy for these plans to work. My wife is doing a better job at that than me!
Wow, you will have an active, busy retirement. It sounds fab. Never been to the Alps but been reading a lot of holiday books lately and there are so many places that sound lovely to holiday in that I have never been to.
We are still thinking long term let somewhere warm for a few months over winter, then Spring and Autumn have a couple of holidays exploring UK, avoiding more expensive summer holidays.
Not sure if we will move or not for a few years, but would like to downsize at some point.
Intend to look for good deals via Airb&b, and Holiday Pirates etc.Money SPENDING Expert0 -
After a lovely holiday in Portugal recently was surprised at how cheap things were over there. One of my friends knows someone who has sold up and retired to inland Portugal and say prices of houses and cost of living much cheaper than UK.
I can certainly see the advantages of being in a sunny climate but not sure I could upsticks and live permanently abroad. Plus not sure of effects of Brexit.
Though certainly holidays for a month or two over winter appeal, not necessarily to only Portugal.
Was looking on the jet2holidays site and prices for a one bedroom apartment for in excess of 28 nights start from approx £650 each.
Anyone else do this or considering it as part of their retirement strategy?
Would certainly save on the winter heating bills.
Could you post a link or what to search to find this type of deal as I am very interested in exactly this type of thing.0 -

Hi,
Go to "jet2holidays" and type in your departure airport, where to, no of nights and no of people.
I have just checked and to go from Manchester to Portugal for 55 nights starts from £598 each for 2 people.
Just wish I was retired now and it would be booked:D
Also worth pricing up DIY, check the flights price via Skyscanner etc and look to see what available on Air B&B as they have long term let deals.
Good luckMoney SPENDING Expert0 -

Ha,
No unusually it doesn't mean that. I just meant that was the price of the cheapest holiday to Portugal for 55 nights, there are obviously more expensive hotels etc. I would want at least a 1 bedroom apartment if staying that long so would pay more.
Really rated jet2 when we went with them at Easter.Money SPENDING Expert0 -
We are planning six weeks abroad and two weeks at home, then another six weeks and rinse and repeat. Do NOT exceed 183 days a year in another country or you will be considered resident for tax purposes there. Just to mention.
Anyway our health insurance only covers us for six weeks at a time abroad. There is no point changing this as it's very reasonable considering existing issues on OH side.
Anyway by the time six weeks is up I want to get home for a week or two to see everyone and all that stuff. Then away we go again!0 -

That sounds like a plan I may adopt. Like the thought of returning every month or so to remind me why I want to be in the sun.Money SPENDING Expert0 -
That soounds a fine idea- if you arent flying long haul?
I am not sure it is worth how much it would cost to do so. Perhaps the OH and I could take turns?0 -

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0
