I'm a long way off retiring but I'd certainly consider it.
I'd imagine if you weren't particular about owning properties then it could be done very cheaply however personally I'd lean towards downsizing as much as possible in the UK but still owning a house and then taking long term lets abroad. Perhaps in a different country every year?

There's lots of website where you're able to rent properties for the longer term 3-6 months rather than look through the more expensive holiday market.
I've got friends that have done this in some pretty far a field places Vietnam, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand etc etc as well as the European countries. I'd certainly be looking to take extended breaks like this when I retire.

I am interested in how people manage healthcare on extended breaks. Insurance for long holidays gets expensive later in life?

After a long dull winter the idea of spending winter abroad certainly appeals!

I like the idea of taking out a series of long term lets to try different places - selling up in the UK and moving abroad is a big step so you need to be as certain as you can that it's the right thing.

As I see it the main considerations are:
    1. healthcare
    2. arranging finances - many financial products state that they are available to UK residents. If you make a permanent move then different considerations apply.
    3. be prepared for visits from friends and relatives from the UK!
  • Personally I'm not retiring for 5 yrs or so but this winter has been so so long and wet and I'm thinking of doing the summer here / winter there thing.

I wouldn't sell up here though but would look to rent for 6 mths or buy if I found somewhere lovely, I always think if you can retain a permanent base here it doesn't matter what happens with Brexit etc.

I have been to Goa, Thailand, India etc on holidays and loved them but the world is a changing place and I think I'd be more safe / comfortable in a European destination.

We've been looking into this for a while and will at some point go for maybe a 4 week rental of a place probably in Spain to see if it works for us with intention of booking longer rentals in Spain, Portugal or Greece.
The main thing stopping us is the cat.
    I know ..... :)

Ha, Blackavar and BJL55, glad I don't have pets.
There again I do have a 15 year old son!! , though hopefully by the time I am plannning my long holidays he will be at Uni.
Can't see us ever totally selling up to live abroad, though i suppose if you found the perfect lifestyle I would have to consider it. Think I would like a couple of 4 week holidays over the winter. Maybe a month in November, come home for Christmas and then a month in January/ February. And then again in March.
There again I also want to holiday over the summer so costs of all these holidays may be prohibitive.
Will have to seriously consider how much to factor in for annual holiday costs.
    Back to my spreadsheet!!

We considered both options when I was forced into early retirement - the intention was for my wife to retire @ 60, then we were going to spend at least 4 or 5 months out of the UK every year .
HOWEVER, before we could put the plans into action the first grandchild arrived - now with the 5th grandchild on the way ,the idea has been shelved as the OH couldn't bear to be away from them:rotfl: (and helps with the childcare a lot of the week!!)
In the succeeding 5 years or so, my health has deteriorated with a few relatively minor problems - so can't see us ever reviving the idea especially in light of the uncertainties Brexit will bring to overseas health care.:(

    1) The people I know who are permanent ex-pats in spain are very happy with the current healthcare arrangements. Of course the new arrangements after brexit could have a big impact. Some of the people I know actually wait to get their dental work done abroad. I agree this is a major consideration.

    2) A consideration but for most people I don't think this would be a deal breaker (whereas healthcare could be).

    3) I would see this as a positive although of course one has to be prepared to say no if it's too much, but for me this would be essential.
