Decorating & Painting Questions?

Options
Hi,

We painted bare smooth timber such as door frames etc. with white water based primer.

Skirting and architraves are already primed MDF white.

Does that mean that I have to use the final paint coat as gloss or satin white or can I use a different colour without worrying white primer showing through it?

There's nothing to stop you using a different colour. Depending on the paint, it might take two coats.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Ideally you need now to undercoat as well. primer is just that - a primer. 2 coats of oil based undercoat and a final top coat will finish the timber properly. You normally undercoat in a similar colour to your top coat.

So theres 4 stages for Interior Timber?:

    - Primer
    - Oil undercoat
    - Another coat of oil undercoat
    - Final paint colour

Do you mean top final coat must be similar colour to the primer colour?

If you are applying say a blue top coat, the manufacturer will normally recommend an appropriate coloured undercoat. This could be a similar blue or even a grey.

    Primer is typically white.

  • Help. Despite my best efforts at decorating, my bathroom ceiling is already peeling AGAIN. I had scraped off the loose paint, sanded it down, used 2 coats of Zinsser sealant and then bathroom paint, and it's already peeling]again. Please help.

    Welcome to MSE. :)

Is there a condensation problem in the bathroom? Or is it very cold/ poorly insulated?

Is the ceiling fully dry and clean before starting? Are you allowing sufficient time to dry after each coat?

What is your bathroom ceiling? Plasterboard? Plaster? Artex? Wood?
