Best thing to cover carpet during DIY?

Options
Hi there
Am looking for advice on the best thing to use cover the carpet on the stairs and landing whilst there's plastering and painting going on in the bedrooms please? The bedrooms aren't carpeted yet but the tradesmen will be in and out using the stairs! Was thinking the coverings that are like cling film and stick to the carpet? Any recommendations gratefully received! Thanks!

Have a look at Screwfix item 72304 (may be cheaper on ebay/amazon etc). I used it whilst refurbing a house and it was great. (Don't put it on laminate - I found from experience it's a nightmare to get off! - There's different stuff for laminate I since found...)

    I'm using these https://www.diy.com/departments/b-q-polythene-sheet-l-4m-w-3m/228456_BQ.prd

I then put a tarp on top of that where I'm working.
  • I always roll the carpets up before I start. If you cover them dirt gets under the covers, particularly at the edge where they're more difficult to clean.

Have the tradesmen told you that you need to sort it? Whenever we've had work done (electrics, plumbing, plastering, building, windows), they've covered everything themselves and cleaned up properly afterwards. The place is usually cleaner than it was to start with!

They know what kind of mess they'll make and should have the right coverings. If they make a mess, it's them that will have to fix it after all, so they may well prefer to use their own tested methods rather than relying on you.
