Open an account and switch into it for the £75 spondoolies
I don't think anyone will give you money for just opening an account! The idea , of course, is that you are transferring all your banking business to them (and hopefully something in there will have big bucks servicing charges!!)
The only other way is to set up a donor account probably with your existing provider (Co-op) and then a few months down the line switch that and collect the moneyBeing polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

So would that qualify as 'switching'? Your suggestion doesn't look to me like I'd be 'transferring all my banking business'...0 -
Given your requirements, I would also second the recommendation for first direct. With other banks, you are likely to face longer waiting times on the phone, automated menus and be more likely to be transferred between staff when you do call..0

Yes, that would still be switching. You just need to make sure that the account you are switching has any required direct debits set up on it. In the case of First Direct and Halifax (the two you seem to be considering) there is no requirement for any direct debits, so open an account and once you have your debit card switch it.0 -

Yes, as long as the account you are switching from meets the requirements of the account you are switching to (for example, active DDs may be required).0
