OK, but it's not a problem, is it. Because luckily you didn't have an accident, and it is possible to explain to your boss that you have now realised that you need insurance to use your car for business purposes. Since the additional premium is unaffordable for you, you cannot continue to use your car for business purposes. You are willing to use a pool car or to use your car if they are happy to pay for the extra insurance (and you will still need the 20p per mile for wear and tear/petrol of course).
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

I understand £200 isn't a lot, but why should I have to pay it? It leaves me out of pocket.

Because you want the job. The company could sack you for driving without insurance on the job and they should ensure you are covered before letting you use your own car. mine requires the insurance certificate first. Otherwise they could be resonsible in the event of any accidents. Are they a big enough company to realise this (though that is no excuse).

20p milage sounds tight. That is more the company car rate where they do the servicing etc. I think nornmal is around 40p.

On getting a quote did you specify the ammount of business miles you would do. Otherwise they would assume all your milage will be business miles and possibly quote higher. Upon changing insureres this happened to me! The quote was cheaper anyway but further reduced when I changed business miles to 1000.

Looks like I've fallen for the dilemma AI/ bot.

(Edited to add: )Won't acknowledge he can claim difference between 45p and what he's paid milage.

Has demonstrated to his boss he can do site visits but is now refusing due to "cost of insurance" and because others have "company cars/allowance".

Has, in fact, driven without insurance, putting everyone else's premiums at risk to cover him.

Its tax relief on the difference, not the actual difference that can be claimed back.
