I have worked there for two years. But only recently have people been asking me to go out.

In terms of mileage they pay back less than 20p.
But I can't claim this as I don't have the business insurance.

I understand £200 isn't a lot, but why should I have to pay it? It leaves me out of pocket.

You can get Mileage Allowance Relief on the difference between what your employer pays and 45p per mile. You claim it on your tax return.

That said, if you make life difficult for your employer, and fail to carry out the duties of the job which other people have done/ do without a fuss, then you may find yourself looking for work elsewhere. - As you have only "recently" been asked to go out to sites, have you been promoted or is this a training post where it was foreseeable that you would be required to visit sites when you joined?

Why is your car the only possible way to get there? Public transport? Taxi? Hire car?

If they only pay 20p that's not enough to cover the cost.
Ask why you should subsidies the business.

Do not use your car without insurance.

Standard insurance often only covers one place of work so you can't even call it a commute going straight from home.

£200 is quite expensive for an add on, but isn't actually very much money, IYSWIM. Why not ask your employer to loan you the money, repayable out of salary over a year (your expenses for using the car should cover it, shouldn't they?)

The OP refers to them being a 'young driver' which may explain the cost, and £200 can be quite a large amount to somebody who doesn't have that money to spare. If the company expects the OP to use their car, and that wasn't required as part of the job spec, they should pick up the additional cost not the OP. Different to a situation where the additional cost is £10 or £15.
Mileage paid for use of a private car has barely increased in many years and comes nowhere near covering the actual cost of using the vehicle. In reality the OP will be out of pocket for every mile of business usage.

20p is incredibly mizerly...I was getting 45p 20 years ago.

Factoring the personal cost of biz use, I would consider another employer. My company won't pay mileage if you don't have business use insurance, however they do have pool cars because they can't make you use your car. I agree though, my job could become very difficult if I didn't have my car.

Don't fall into the trap of using your car anyway...my brother worked for a large supermarket who had him filling the boot of his car everyday to transfer stock around the local shops!!

i would be getting less than 20p for mileage.

I'm the only one in this position as most colleagues have got a company vehicle /allowance.
I want to do my best in my job and fulfil everything that is required. But I don't want to feel forced into using a car that isn't covered.

  • I ask colleagues to take me, there has been times were I've felt pressured to use my car , and have ended up using it. (Stupidly)

Looks like I've fallen for the dilemma AI/ bot.

(Edited to add: )Won't acknowledge he can claim difference between 45p and what he's paid milage.

Has demonstrated to his boss he can do site visits but is now refusing due to "cost of insurance" and because others have "company cars/allowance".

Has, in fact, driven without insurance, putting everyone else's premiums at risk to cover him.

You have knowingly driven without insurance?

Forget the fact you could lose your licence, if you were involved in an accident which wasn't the other person's fault how on earth would you pay?

The reason you are quoted £200 is because of idiots like you knowingly driving without insurance and the rest of us have to pay for that.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
