Wooden Door Weather Protection?

What is the best protection from the elements for an exterior wooden back door, i know you can varnish them but this can peel off over time.
I notice various types of oil based products online but i'm not sure which or what would provide the best protection,
I have had a wooden front door since around 1992 and i've only varnished it a couple of times however, since 2010 it is now been enclosed in a porch. It has swelled a little over this time but is still in good condition considering the weather conditions it has endured such as snow and hot afternoon sun.
Does anyone have any experience of the best way to protect a wooden door and the best type of products to do this with.:j

Whatever you did with your other door seems to have worked however, i would go for an oil based solution for the best protection, some can protect for up to three years from what i understand, swelling can be reduced by treating the edges of the door where moisture could enter.
Moisture and Hot sun are the main enemies of a wooden door!Enjoy everyday like it's your last!0 -
I've been using Sadolin products for 40 years with no problems. If it's previously been varnished though that may be a problem.
