Wickford, Billericay (possibly), Rayleigh - all a LOT nicer than Basildon! Chelmsford you might be able to get a smaller house for that price - not in one of the nicer areas though!

If freedom of movement from Europe was eliminated you'll find you might stand a chance of affording house near London without losing small fraction of your life to long commutes.

Interest rate rises will do the job just as nicely.

I've lived in Gillingham all my life and I'm planning to move to Rochester soon. I'm a single woman. Honestly I probably wouldn't recommend Gillingham, it's OK for me because I'm familiar with the place but it's only selling points really are transport connections and cheap houses.

Rochester is nice, the town is pretty with a lot of history and nice restaurants/cafes etc. There are nice green spaces and it's easy walking distance to Chatham for the usual big stores. If you prioritise a quick commute over a nice area I'd also suggest looking at Gravesend or Ebbsfleet which both have very short commutes now with the highspeed train.

I know Medway very well, if you have any questions about the area just shout.

I'm a bit biased because I do some work for the local council, but as a semi-regular visitor it seems to me that Medway is improving at least in parts. Also has easy access to countryside on all sides!

    Does that include Gillingham?
