Best high street bank/BS for sending money abroad?

I have to send a very large sum of money to the US and despite poorer exchange rates would prefer to carry out the transfer in branch.
Does anyone know which bank or building society gives the best exchange rates.

As you accept, you won't get the best rates on the high street and even shopping around isn't particularly straightforward, not least because rates are by their nature dynamic, although the charges at the UK end should be visible in the Ts & Cs (there may also be charges levied by the US bank(s) involved).

Get a quote from your own bank or building society and then compare it with the specialist brokers at https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/foreign-currency-exchange and see what's best after that....

If you don't want to save a lot of money by using a broker, you will need to enquire amongst the banks available to you for a quote on the amount in question, all within a short period for comparison before rates shift. The actual transfer charges become insignificant for a large amount, it's the exchange rate you need to negotiate with their FX section/dealers.
