why is my insurance 1k more this year?

Car insurance is due for renewal, was paying £1.7k last year, have earned 2 years NCB. All was good and well got a quote for £800 when putting down the address I ACTUALLY live at (lincolnshire) but the car isn't kept here, it's at my family's house as I didn't bring the car with me when moving since I had no plan to drive it around here, no need. But my dad needs to use my car, he is insured to drive anyone's car so it's not an issue of additional driver making it higher as he doesn't need to be added but when I put the car is kept (london) same address as last year the price is now a whopping £3000?! I haven't made any claims, had a black box installed, never sped in fact I rarely drove it since I live elsewhere? I find it ironic because they say lincolnshire has the worst drivers and roads :rotfl:.

Is it possible it has anything to do with my dad having a policy cancelled by insurance at the address? Because I can't for the life of me see why I'm being quoted £3-4k now and that's with me adding 2 years NCB and NOT adding him as an additional driver... help? I've tried searching individually with the actual providers, clearing history and cache still no good.

Held my license for 2 years now, I'm 20 and car is a peugeot 206 1.1 5 door worth about £500.

  • also like to add my mum kindly pays for my insurance as it's way too much for me so I don't think it's a credit rating issue as she's got a good rating:D

Hi douknow, suspect your quotes are being affected by you changing the address. Insurers see all the quote data and potentially believe you're manipulating data which they see as negative (and potentially high risk)behaviour. Best course of action is to phone a few of the more competitive insurers and explain your situation. Guess key question is do you need a car if you not using it day to day?
  • thanks for your reply, I guess that does make sense, however yes I will be needing the car in a couple of months onwards due to change in circumstance, car also needs to be insured for my dad as his is broken down, if it wasn't for him I wouldn't insure it until I needed it. I was phoning around and they all kept quoting me ridiculous prices with the same address the car has always been at.

Could it be something to do with the fact that your dad is the main driver.
  • But he isn't the main driver? I am. He's only using it for the time being. He isn't on my policy as I said before he doesn't need to be on any policy to drive a car as he's automatically insured, so my insurer would not know he drives the car.

When getting dummy quotes do just that, fake name, similar address and DO NOT put your car reg in just the model and make.

    Did you do the above?

Douknow, you need to be a bit careful with your Dad driving your car under his policy. First of all he'll only have Third Party only cover meaning any damage he causes to the car won't be covered. Second this type of cover is only really intended for emergencies or very occasional use.

The second point there is kind of irrelevant. The way policies are currently written you could drive other cars every day, the occasional use intention is unenforceable.

Your first point is valid, but an old car with limited value might not require 'first party' insurance anyway, as any claim above the excess will write it off.
  • Him driving my car doesn't bother me, he's been driving my car/mums car with no problem for a long time but it's only when he needs to use it.
  • Anyways we've managed to get a quote with smart wheels again but ideally we wanted to get rid of the black box as their dashboard to check miles, top up etc... never worked and their customer service was rubbish.
