Hi what is the safest way to pay a roofer so that I'm protected in the case of a dispute, I have to pay a deposit within 24hrs of work starting, then an amount at the end then the balance after I've received my BCO certificate
Debit card....credit card....cheque..
TIA

Not many roofers will take cards. Cash, cheque or bank transfer.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

Just like with builders and other trades, good luck with finding one that has a merchant services agreement to take cards. It's a business overhead that someone in that kind of work doesn't need, either in terms of time or cost.
Clients will always be dealt with face to face, there's no sending of goods, the number of transactions is very, very, very low compared even to where I work (we maybe put through 10-20 card transactions a day, all mail order). Accepting cards would bring zero benefit to them but an absolute ton of admin and contractual stuff (ever read a merchant services agreement?)Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
Bank transfer is the best option. Just make sure you get the roofers bank details directly from them. If you are paying a large sum, e.g. for an entire new roof, I would send the deposit via a bank transfer and have the roofer confirm that it arrived before paying the balance. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0

I disagree with that. I run a property maintenance company and we take cards. It is very easy. there are some good options on the market aimed at infrequent users such as izettle and world pay zinc. No monthly fees and a simple one of transaction charge when you use the facilities. Money in my bank within three days.
More and more tradesmen are now taking cards as it seems to be in demand from customers. However, finding a roofer that does take cards is still difficult.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
