Sellers Beware - Paypal T&C

Just a quick warning to any sellers out there... I have recently had a payment reversed by Paypal as it was a fraudulant transaction. This happened almost a week after the transaction. I was not covered by the Seller Protection scheme because I had used regular mail which cannot be traced. I always used to use recorded / signed for delivery, but have recently started giving buyers an option. Guess everything needs to go by recorded delivery from now on...

If I am sending out expensive or 'one off' items then I'll always send them recorded to cover myself in case of a chargeback via paypal. I don't give the buyers an option, the post and packing includes the 65p recorded delivery fee.

However for small light items I realise that the additional 65p added in to the postage might mean people won't bid so I tend to chance sending them with just a certificate of posting (available free from the post office). It means that I have no defence if someone does a chargeback but if something does turn out to get lost in the post then I anticipate just refunding the buyer and claiming against the post office using my certificate of postage.

Pultok, are you sure it was a fraudulant transaction?

Paypal reversed one of my payments recently and when I emailed the purchaser they were horrified. I had a cheque in the post the next day and a month later an email from Paypal telling me they had made a mistake.

I now clear my account every time it reaches £50 as I don't think Paypal can take out what is not there?!

I'm not convinced that it is a fraudulant transaction. The buyer has 100% positive feedback so far, and I had more valuable stuff for sale at the time which he wasn't interested in. But I've sent him an email over the weekend which he has yet to respond to. Wait and see I guess...

Pultok, I have just had the same happen to me. I sent the item registered, it was a first time ebayer so Paypal are telling me the address wasnt verified so I'm not covered. I dont understand, to get both my ebay and paypal accounts I had to register a debit/credit card with them, wouldnt my purchaser have to do the same? Why am I not covered. I'm furious.
  • I'm pretty sure that my address is also unverified on PayPal, despite me having both a credit AND a debit card registered. I think it just depends on whether your card issuer subscribes to whatever verification scheme PayPal uses - and as it's presumably US-based, a lot of UK card issuers don't.

for every successful transaction you have thru paypal, after 60 days, your rating increases, once you reacha certain level of rating your address becomes verifed, but i dont know when or how...... other than my address is now verified
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
