Sounds like they've fitted a second hand turbo0

Why do people buy cars from dealers so far away?
Not as if there isnt much choice for 7 seaters in the £2000 price range.0 -
Take the car back, with a letter formally rejecting the car. Give him 7 days to refund you.File a claim at County Court. You can do it online.
This is being presented like its a simple quick event. The seller may refuse a refund and then the O/P has to go down the route of taking him to court.
This may take months to bottom out, all the time the O/P is without a car.
There is no guarantee the O/P will win in court - though its likely - and even if he does, the seller may not pay up. THEN you're in to the realms of trying to appoint baliffs or whatever to recover the money - all of which costs even more money, with no guaranteed results.
So if you're going to propose the O/P goes down this route, you should at least make them aware of the (possibly) significant risk and great inconvenience, rather than present it as a simple take it back and get your money back solution.0 -
OP - do you have a decent trusted local garage you could take the car to? Could be worth asking them to give the car a once over (not to fix but just so you know what issues you may be looking at).
I probably wouldn't rely on what the seller tells you the problem is.0 -
Some of the symptoms are similar to a faulty injector, on its way out. Maybe the turbo is a red herring but they've made the turbo develop a separate fault with shoddy work/parts.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080

You can save a fair amount of money. I live in a rural county. If I travel 40/50 miles to the west where there are two major cities cars drop several hundred quid or more in price. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. It's similar where I live. You can save money by travelling.
OTOH, I wasted a whole Saturday once looking at vehicles over 100 miles away because I was looking for something specific. The ones I saw were either not as described, and / or too expensive for what they were. In the end I found what I wanted locally, parked outside a guy's house with a "for sale" notice on it. it was a real bargain too.
So I'm not keen, as it's putting pressure on yourself to buy, especially if time is at a premium.0 -
There is no easy answer. The dealer wants you to take it somewhere local for a diagnosis - if it was me I would do that, the noise could be as simple as split or incorrectly fitted pipe. I would get someone trusted and local to give you an appraisal on what needs doing to sort it and what it will cost. Then contact the selling dealer and see what he will do for you.
As pointed out by others at 12 years old and 120k miles you don’t have much come back when it breaks down. When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on0 -

You travel if the price is right.
I bought my current car 200 miles from home and saved at least £1500. But I still had 28 months manufacturer warranty left so no need to visit the dealer again.
But there is a difference in spending £22k and £2k for a banger. A car like that should be bought locally.0
