Windows 10 won't update

Hi. This has been driving me crazy for ages . . . .
I checked my update history and in the middle of December last year (2017) I started getting failed Windows 10 updates.
The specific error code is: 0xC1900208
Subsequently I get the security failed updates as I'm "not running the latest version of Windows 10".
And the other message I've received (which I presume is related) was that I need to uninstall HotSpot shield, BUT I've checked everywhere on my HP laptop and I don't even have Hotspot shield.
As I said, this is driving me nuts. I keep getting those massive blue box failed update messages that cover the entire screen. It's irritating enough for me - but I set the laptop up through the TV for my Dad to watch a European Semi Final the other week and he said that after 2mins one of the said massive blue boxes covered the entire screen. (As he's fairly immobile and non tech savvy he couldn't do anything about it, so obviously it ruined the entire game).
Has anyone else had this problem? Did they manage a fix?
I'm joining the 'I hate Windows 10 club'.
I have tried loads of stuff, including stopping all the startup programmes and trying to update but that revealed the same error code.
My last option is to get out the old Windows 7 CD and install that.
For clarity Windows 10 came pre-installed on the laptop.
Help guys. You're my last hope . . .

if you have enough free space?, I would run the below from an elevated command prompt, and see if the problem still occurs
so get an administrative dos box aka command prompt - click start and type cm and when the 'cmd' appears, right click and select run as administrator
in the box type (or paste it) :
Dism /online /get-packages /format:table > C:\patches.txt
if there are problems using notepad read the patches.txt file and it could be an incompatibility issue0 -

Why not just install the 'latest version of Windows 10'?

what took you so long ?? :rotfl:
joking aside, w10 is a total PITA. There's still machines out there with no working usb ports after the servicing stack debacle, and now my (up to last week) "reliable" w10 lappy is starting to suffer vol. control issues ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple
