I have just cancelled my direct debit for my car tax through my bank. Do I also need to ring the tax people and let them know I’ve cancelled it or can I just go online on the 1st and pay it the day it’s due? I just want to pay yearly instead as it’s due in a week just don’t want to get charged twice!

There are some instructions on the DVLA website.
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-direct-debit/change-payments
Essentially, cancel direct debit and then tax your vehicle on the first day of the month that your next Direct Debit payment was due. Use the 11 digit number on your vehicle log book (V5C) to apply for the tax as you you will not have the reminder letter.0 -
OP, in case you didn't know, you can pay yearly by direct debit as well - saves worrying about forgetting it when it's due next year.0
