I can only see Humax foxsat hdr it is 5 years old about now. psychic teabag, I have put an empty 16 g usb stick in the front but not formatted correctly, it`s fat 32, tried to look at my hard drive properties but can`t see what format and a little nervous about plugging it in to humax as I don`t want to lose anything off there.

You might be better off asking on a specialist forum, eg https://www.avforums.com/threads/humax-foxsat-hdr-copying-to-usb.892077/

It seems that FAT32 should work, though that has a limitation that an individual file cannot be larger than 4Gb. Which would be a couple of hours of SD, or maybe not even 1 hour of HD. If your box is 5 years old, that's probably just SD then ?

If you want to use your portable drive, it seems that windows would not normally format a drive bigger than 32Gb to be FAT32, so if it's bigger than that, it's probably NTFS, which is seems is not supported by the humax. One person on the forum above said they'd split it into several smaller partitions.

Plugging it into the humax is unlikely to lose the contents, but you never know. (But I operate on the policy that if you don't have a backup, you should assume it will vanish spontaneously at any time anyway.)

If you've been poking about at it a lead may have come loose. You should have 2 satellite cables connected - try disconnecting and reconnecting them both - they're 'F-connectors' and need to be unscrewed, bit fiddly. Get it set up as well as possible, and do a test recording. Forget about the USB port at the front.

I have a Humax freesat, no expert by any stretch but if no signal on have you had your dish checked

For the moment, if we've got signal on tuner 1, we'll assume the dish/LNB is OK.

Can you explain that very simply please, I have loads on my humax that I would like on my portable hard drive to play in another room.

No. It's more just for backup purposes - you can't just move a hard drive between rooms like that. The recordings can only really be played on a Humax box, and there are lots of restrictions.

We're still trying to work out if the hard drive in the unit is faulty. If you're able to get it set up again after the factory reset, and possibly getting tuner 2 sorted, have a go at recording something. Small steps!

I do wish people would stop hijacking threads about two different problems and different boxes

I have two foxsat hdrs and they support HD but if the recordings are in HD then you can't transfer them elsewhere unless you have the patch which seems unlikely. Read here https://www.avforums.com/threads/media-file-server-bundle-for-the-foxsat-hdr-release-4-part-6.2024876/

Sorry flopsy about my above rant about hijacking . Assuming that your box still plays live broadcasts it sounds like your HDD(disk) is foobarred, which box have you got exactly ? If tuner 2 still shows no signal or did the fault move to tuner 1 when you swapped. A little info from you may help
The model number should show on the menu > Diagnostics screen

Edited: Can you play any recordings back ?

F connectors are not the best if subjected to strain. If you have been moving the box around much you may have caused a problem on the one that is showing no signal.

They are simply a shell that twists over the coax with the braid pushed back over the outer and the coax inner itself forms the "pin" for the centre connection. A visual inspection should show if the shell has been pulled forward leaving the inner too short or allowing an electrical short with the braid.

Taking a good look and swapping the cables over should let you find out if there is a problem on the LNB or cable itself. I'd bet on the connector. If swapping over still shows tuner 2 with no signal then figure on it either being a duff tuner or some quirk of the firmware.

There is an alternate firmware that allows you to download programs from the drive over the network. SD programs are large and HD ones encrypted to only play on the same box so it's hardly worth doing. When I installed that firmware it was by using a USB stick in the front port and the machine was picky on brands - I tried more than one before I got it to work. That may be why whoever asked is having problems using the USB port. Try a different brand drive.

Yes, both tuners should still work, but the second tuner is only used if you're recording something. You would need to look in the menus for some sort of signal strength meter, which would show you whether both tuners are working or not. But again, we're chasing a faulty hard drive here, not the tuners...
