old extension plans?

Hi, I've just bough a house with a single storey rear extension. We ideally want to build on top to create a bathroom but how can we find out if the original foundations were deep enough? The next door neighbour seems to think they were but how can we know for sure?

Hire a structural engineer to investigate and report on the existing structure and its foundations and whether they are capable of supporting another storey.0

Ask to view the Buildig Control file at the local council offices to start with, if it has a completion certificate.
Failing that, as Aylesbury Duck says, dig a trial hole and engage a structural engineer. You're going to have to do that anyway but the council files will be helpful when you start planning initially.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Might it be better to demolish the present extension (is it a bit dated?) and build a two storey extension with a wow factor?Gather ye rosebuds while ye may0

How long ago was the extension built. It is a LONG time since you were allowed to put lesser foundations in for a single storey.0
