welcome finance

Hi completely new to MSE Forum, my husband took out a welcome finance loan before we met, the debt was paid in full when he sold his home, April 2006. At the time he worked for the NHS entitled to full pay when on any leave, even still he was told the loan wouldn't be offered without PPI, currently looking for original agreement ,we have the solicitors letter stating amount and date of final lump sum payment, excess of £17000 and that was after a few years of paying, we think the original loan was for around £8000, do we have a claim, I see lots pf people saying it's no use trying to claim back anything if the loan was taken out prior to 2005. Any help appreciated, thanks
