Insuring two cars

Options
I'm just about to buy a new car but for various reasons I would like to keep my old one until the new year.
What is the best / cheapest way to provide insurance for both? I will be the only driver and I currently have 10yrs NCB. My current insurers, Sainsburys, want £105/month to add the new car to my existing policy. Should I cancel my current policy (expires Jan08) and look elsewhere for something that covers both. Or can I let my current policy run to cover my old car and buy a new policy to cover my new car when it arrives?
Suggestions please.

Can you expand on the 'various reasons' & explain why you want to keep your 'old' car...I assume you are still going to drive it? I don't think you can apply your NCB to 2 car insurances at the same time. If you want to drive both cars one insurance premium will be NCB discounted....the other wont....you will have to do the maths (play around with quotes) to work out your cheapest option.
  • My husband had this problem a while ago. We tried Admiral who were pretty good but settled on A-Plan in the end. We explained the NCB was on one car and they gave us a discount equivilent to the number of years NCB on the other car. Ended up being about £800 for two cars when the closest alternative was £1100.

If you cancel your policy with Sainsburys I wouldn't have thought you'd get any refund back but at least then you could try the above to get both cars insured.

If you are going down this route though be careful as to cancellation charges / how much you would get back if you decided to get rid of the 'old car' later on.
