How long should an exhaust last?

CRA covers you but it also depends on what you pay to how long it is expected to last. So assuming that it was the CAT section replaced (OP's post is quite poor at describing what exactly was replaced) then if you only paid under a couple of hundred quid for a cheap !!! third party replacement you'd expect it to last nowhere near as long as one which was several hundred quid from the main dealer.
Perhaps you would supply a link to this definition in the CRA. I can't find anything that says consumer rights are dependent on how much you have paid for goods.0 -
Taking into account the vagueness we're being subjected to, I would be very disappointed if any NEW exhaust part fitted to a car lasted less than 2 years, on any average kind of mileage or usage. If a part has failed within that *I* would *reasonably expect* it to have lasted longer.
Even if it's a cheap part, you can still have expectations - who wants to replace car parts every year?
The vagueness was intentional as I explained above. It was a general opinion I was asking for.
Seeing that some would like more details, I shall oblige. The exhaust in question comes in three sectional parts. Front, middle and backbox. The middle contains within it the catalytic converter. The middle part and backbox part were replaced two years and two months ago. The middle part pipework has severely corroded and partly disintegrated. The backbox section looks like new. The vehicle has done less than 12k miles since replacement. The vehicle is a Peugeot. The parts were purchased from a local Motor Factors company. On enquiring about the guarantee of the parts, I am told by this company that the backbox has 3 years but the middle (catalytic converter) section has only 2 years.0 -
You have answered this yourself:
" On enquiring about the guarantee of the parts, I am told by this company that the backbox has 3 years but the middle (catalytic converter) section has only 2 years. "I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Have you read any of this thread?
I have been asking with regard to consumer rights what is a "reasonable" amount of time for replacement exhaust parts to last not how long was my guarantee....Oh dear.....never mind0 -
I've seen cars with exhausts that have lasted 20 years. Yet I personally had an exhaust fail once after just 12 months. Not impressed.
Luck of the draw and how much salt and crap is on the road I think.0 -

Look what anyone here thinks is irrelevant.
If you want to claim otherwise you need a report (from an expert) saying it was inherently fautly. I guarantee you are not going to get one.0 -
I had to replace back box a few days ago. Warranty on fitted part - 2 years. Back box has been purchased from quite popular chain company, fitted by another chain company, so I don't expect it to be top high quality. I am happy, if it lasts a few years. I have been informed about warranty at the point of sale. If I wanted expensive back box I would research different products.
Don't forget, that last winter was quite harsh. The gritting lorries were out all the time and in April we still scraped ice from the windscreen. One of the joys of car owning.0 -

So that "reasonable amount of time" cannot be linked to the length of warranty?
Yes I read the Thread. And I am a retired workshop foreman. So, to answer the question in the form you require it to be answered: the reasonable amount of time for replacement parts to last, is linked to the length of warranty. "Reasonable amount of time" is irrelevant. You cannot expect any form of replacement or contribution, outside of that. Hope that helps.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

I'm bored of this Tread.OP not listeningWe may not win by protesting, but if we don’t protest we will lose.
If we stand up to them, there is always a chance we will win.0
