We are moving to a new property half way through a month.
We gave our current landlord notice on 15/04/2018 that we would be moving out 15/05/2018.
Our landlord has come back to us to say that we are liable for the full rent for the month of May and the same for council tax/utilities
Im sure council tax and utilities are ended on date you leave?
As for the rent I really dont want to pay for period were not here as we already have a deposit and rent on the new place for that period.
Any help appreciated.

What date did your tenancy begin?
I understand that regulations changed a while back to allow a split month end of tenancy but only if your tenancy began after a certain date.
From memory that could have been oct 16 but I am happy to be corrected if that date is not correct!
With regard to council tax you will be liable until the date the tenancy officially ends, same too with utilities.in S 38 T 2 F 50

We've been in since August 2012 but renogotiated our rates/terms on February 2017.0 -
What day do you pay the rent? Does your tenancy state notice online with rent period? If so did you do This?
Example. I moved in mid month but rental period is from 1st of every month. If I were to give notice it would need to fall in line with this. Not mid month.0 -

Assuming you're in England or Wales;
Council tax may or may not end when you vacate (it must be treat as a separate issue to any rental liability) - it depends on the specifics of the tenancy agreement as to whether or not you remain liable as the 'non-resident owner' for council tax purposes after you have vacated. The legislation around this hasn't changed but the situation as confirmed by the court of appeal relatively recently.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

We need to check whether you have given the correct notice. This is very important.
So find your tenancy agreement and tell us when it started. Was it for a year? What happened at the end of the fixed term of the tenancy agreement?
You need to give us a timeline of what has happened since you began your tenancy. Was it renewed? Did you go onto a periodic tenancy - month to month?
What does it say in your tenancy agreement about giving notice?
Read this and you will see how important it is to end a tenancy correctly:

pmlindyloo has asked the right questions.
There are some irrelevant questions (eg date rent is paid) and erroneous advice (eg change to regulations) in earlier posts above, so ignore those!0 -
Ring the council to check, can you be charged to live in a place when you aren't there? That said, for the sake of two weeks I would say to the landlord that you will leave at the month end which gives you two weeks to check all is ok and finished at the new build and no pressure to be all in on one day.0
