MSE Martin already has a good article on this.

I'm not sure if 5k is sufficient - suggest you do some research. In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:0 -
There is plenty of info on earlier threads on this subject. You want to use one of the specialist Foreign Exchange firms who will transfer money for you at rates approaching the business ER and mostly with no added charges. It's best to shop around to see what the best £/$ ER is when you want to transfer. I have used Rational FX with great service for a number of transactions this year (including money to buy a house in France) and they were great, personal contact, quick same day transfer. www.rationalfx.com Their minimum transfer is £5000.
There are many others e.g www.4xcc.com, www.xe.com/
Don't use the banks who will give you tourist type ER and add charges on top.0
