Anti-Ageing Face Creams - do any live up to their claims?

Up to now my, *ahem*, 'beauty routine' has consisted of slapping on some Nivea Cream and the odd dollop of E45 cream for emergency repair work on my slightly dry, typically, English Rose complexion. However the time has come for a little more investment and effort to be made and I'm bewildered by all the products available and the claims that they make...

'visibly reduces the signs of aging...'

'fine lines disappear...'

'firms and contours...'

'deep anti-creasing action...'

're-builds natural defenses...'

'seals in hydration...'

'smoother, firmer skin in days...'

etc. etc. etc.

Can you save me from making expensive mistakes by giving me the benefit of your experiences? Which products live up to their claims, which work/don't work? The 'Painted Lady' sales assistants on the cosmetic counters frighten me to death so I can't ask them!

In particular I would love to know if anyone has used that Creme de la Mer stuff that the glossies go on about and if it is worth the money? Now I wonder who might have tried it? .... Judiiiiiii!

I use Lidl Q10 anti wrinkle cream which I think is excellent and as good as any of the expensive stuff and is only about £3 a tube or jar!
Also I heard a dermatologist on the TV the other day who said the best thing you could do for your face is to use sun cream as a moisturiser all year round.

I'm so glad somebody agrees with me this suff is brilliant and excellent value, feels and looks as good as lots of the expensive stuff, I know cos I've tired them.

I think most dermatologists would say there's no such thing as 'ante aging' the most important thing is to moisturise and any old moisturiser will do. I will buy expensive perfumes but not face creams since I found Lidl's.:D
Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

I saw a feature on "This Morning" a while back about anti wrinkle creams. Although there is no way to stop the aging process, you can slow things down and make lines less noticeable with some creams. According to the dermatologist on there, he said the vital ingredient to look for is retinol.

    LOOK!!!!...A bloke commenting, here!!

I would think the important thing is to regularly, from a young age (not much help if you're 199 already!!) use some form of moisturiser & keep out of the sun!!

I've ALWAYS, since ateen, had something morning & night, Nivea was my mums favourite, back then, so we shared - it's what Tom Jones uses, so they say!!

Currently it's St Ives calogen & elasticine, whatever that is!!

I've even got 61p Boots Basics, which is a bit greasy, but you only use a tiny drop & it's OK, too.

& all you ladies are welcome to test the smoothness of my cheecks.... ANYTIME!!

Yay!!!!! Q10 is good stuff  Such a bargain!!!

Allexie, I've never tried the product you quote ... but, if I'm really honest ... the only way anyone would know how good it is, without a doubt, is if they had spent their life only using it on one side of their face to see if it made any difference. My own mum swore by E45 creme (but the choices were far more limited in her day LOL ).

I recall an article in a mag a couple of years ago. They basically tested loads of products from shampoos to face creams to mascara etc.

All products were put in plain tubs and labelled a,b,c,d etc. I remember the face cream section because I was looking for one at the time.

They tested dozens from Boots own brand to the super expensive £100 a pot Creme de la Mere (check spelling!) and the one that came on top was Nivea Q10 Anti Wrinkle. (the eye creme was highly rated too but was beaten by Superdrug's own brand for a £1, or something)

I started using this and really liked it. It feels fresh and sinks into your skin. some laugh when I say I use anti wrinkle but I read somewhere you should start in mid 20s because, as already mentioned, it all about looking after your skin from an early age and protecting it from the harmfull rays of the sun and pollution. But a little sun is also good for you! All in moderation remember!!!

Boots have been selling it for £10 but I always bought it from Tescos at around £5 and it lasts at least a couple of months. Night time cream also available and smells nice and fresh as you climb into bed;)

    Anyone else using?

Is it true you should change your face creme every so often so your skin doesn't "get used to it"? Always seems to be conflicting views when I ask that to beauticians.:o

    Hi
The besst thing to do is get lots of samples and try them out to find what works best for you. What might suit one person might be awful on you. I dont know about the anti aging products claims but keeping your skin well moisturised takes years off you. I personally use Decleor ,they gave me a skin anylasis ages ago and their moisturiser and oil have worked wonders on my skin. I used to use a cheap moisturiser and went through a lot of tubs - while although the decleor is initallly expensive I only need 1 tube a year. If you get an opinion on your skin type and needs from the painted beauty consultants you can save a fortune not buying the wrong produsts. Some of them are nice ! and I just blatenly go up and ask for trial sizes. The worst thing they can say is no ! Knowing my skin type has saved me a fortune , currently I have been using sample sizes of Christian dior 60/80 eye cream for the past month :-) good luck .
If you Pm me I have some trial sizes of Lancome + dior you could try out ( anti aging too ! ) .

    Mortgage-free Glee!
I think we should also mention things not to do that would help the anti aging process.... all the cream in the world wont help if you dont take care of your body!!! Mind you a few good genes help.... and my mother over 70 is pretty much wrinkle free, a few laughter lines etc. As was her own mother.

    Smoking , very bad
Sun (without full block), very, very bad
Drinking too much alcohol ...bet you that is bad too !!

I have not led such a straight and narrow path... time will tell if the creams work!!!! I have used in the past ulay.... superdrug vit E .... DDML...... was give avon stuff to use so using that at the mo. Of those I like DDML best followed by superdrug ownbrand

Will look for the lidl next time there ....

Sorry for not seeing this post earlier but yes, unfortunately i have tried the Creme De La Mer and its pants. Firstly its hard to apply. You have to warm your finger tips so that it slightly melts the cream as its in a sort of solid block (Think of coconut oil in a tub). Well, not too solid but not easy to get out. Then you have to press it into your face as its too stiff to rub, plus the fact its not creamy enough to spread everywhere. It also gave me spots on my chin. I didnt see a difference in my skin at all. All that for over £100 a pot!!!! Bahhhhh!!!! they must have seen me coming.

The very best thing you can do for your face is to use a spf every day during summer and winter. I also try and use a foundation which acts as another layer if the sun is particularly bright if i have time.

Yes, that is true. If you can find 2 or 3 good products and rotate them that should work. Beauticians don't want you moving away from their products :D

I have recently been using Bio Oil as a skin conditioner and have to say I'm really impressed with it. I have dryish skin so use a moisturiser on top, but know a lot of people (men and women) who find it enough on its own.
