Gas safety inspector lying about attending appointments, council threats

Hi,

A gas safety check recently was due, I missed the first one and the council threatened legal action if I did not allow entry on the next appointment date. On that date I stayed at home all day to listen for the door, no one turned up. I then received another threatening letter and a new date was set. I again sat on the sofas all day waiting. Again they did not turn up at all. I left a voicemail with the council explaining the situation again. I today received another letter with further threats of legal action, and included was supposed evidence of the inspector turning up. A photo of the missed appointment card hanging from the letterbox outside, which I never received. What can I do, if I book the next appointment and they don't turn up, I go to court. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Is the photograph of your door? Could they be going to the wrong address by mistake?

I would call the council and explain that you have not heard the inspector knocking at your door. Suggest that they give him your telephone number and ask him to ring you when he's outside. That way you can open the door and if he's at the wrong property you can help direct him to the correct one.

Nowadays I tend to put a notice on the door saying 'I am in, please knock loudly'. It prevents a lot of problems.

So you're suggesting they turned up at your house, put a "missed appointment card" in your letterbox, took a photo of it, took the card out, and left again - all without you hearing or noticing a thing, despite you expecting their visit?

    Yes that sounds correct.

In order to maliciously pretend to turn up they actually turned up.

They probably parked the van 3 miles away and came up through the sewers just so they could manufacture some fake evidence of them being in the place that they actually were in without being seen.

Perhaps the OP was in the toilet or in the garden??? Did you have a door bell that was loud enough???

Does your door have a bell? Is it working? Is there a knocker? Can you hear it?

Puzzled. Surely it's only landlords who need these checks? And if you are the landlord why are you in the property?

    The council are the landlords.

I would just let them take legal action, if they go to the bother of getting a warrant I'm sure they'll make sure they turn up at the right time and place and knock loudly :)

Unfortunately, in my experience, they don't. I don't know why. I get quite a lot of people including couriers just rap their knuckles against the door. I'm 10 meters away and don't always hear such a light tap. These are the people I miss.

Doesn't make sense to me, after all, its a waste of time to them, but it definitely happens as I happened to be right next to the door last week and just about heard the light tap so it definitely happens. I have a letter box that could be used to announce but it seems a lot of people don't use it. Doorbells don't seem to work for long, so I don't buy them anymore.
