Tesco sim only top up

My husband has an old pay as you go Tesco mobile which he tops up as needed . He has now received a text to say he has to go to onto a tariff. He refuses to do this and have some one tell him how much he has to put on his phone when has not in the past. Is there anyone out there that still does the old way pay as you go no set Tarriff.
I have wanted to get him advanced for a while as a gift but he just will not entertain the idea. Yes he is Stubborn.

Vodafone have just introduced a new PAYG tariff (PAYG1) which I think is good for occasional users. Although call rates are high, the maximum your spend on UK call, texts and mobile data is capped at £1 a day. When I'm at home I rarely use my phone but when I'm away I use it much more so this fits perfectly for me.
You can also opt in to their international calls which much reduces overseas calls to which it is much cheaper than using landline (eg calls to Australian mobiles 25p a minute). Again for occasional use that's fine by me.
