Write back to Amigo and tell them no payment has been received from them into your bank account ending XXXX - only give them the last 4 digits of your account number, nothing else.

Point out that, since they say in their Terms and Conditions that they pay the loan amount into the guarantor's account and you have not had any such funds deposited then you cannot be the guarantor they are seeking to recover anything from.

Are you 100% sure it is a genuine letter ?

It takes a fair degree of forward planning, not to mention fairly personal knowledge, to pull off a stunt like this.

And when they defaulted, they must of known you would be contacted........a very risky strategy considering the consequences to both your relationship with them, and their likelihood of serving time at her majesties pleasure.

Desperate people do desperate things, not necessarily thinking of the long term. People who use amigo obviously have a history of poor money management and so running off to Amigo to try and get more cash for whatever reason seems logical. The fact OP is already talking about how to avoid getting the police involved shows the borrower probably believed they'd get away with it. If OP won't shop them, they'll have to shoulder the debt as Amigo clearly aren't going to just give the money away

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

OP you say you dont want to get the police involved so are you going to pay the money back then, if you report the relative for fraud the loan may get written off.
