On a post on here a while ago someone suggested with Win10 you don’t need 3rd party AV anymore and that windows defender is adequate.
Is this true?

I suggested it in a recent post based on what I've read on here over the last few months. I have assumed that it is true - I certainly hope so now I've got rid of my 3rd party AV!0

If you're careful where you browse and which links you click, you could say there's never been a need for 3rd party AV.someone suggested with Win10 you don!!!8217;t need 3rd party AV
For mature Windows 10 users I suggest that the latest Windows 10 anti-virus along with Edge is a "good enough" combination. If your preferred browser is Chrome then I'd suggest this new Chrome add-on

For the more adventurous home user I'd suggest Bitdefender free but I don't really think there's much in it these days.

Adequate is the word .
Win 10 Defender stops something like 95 to 98% of threats .0 -
I used to use Windows built in A/V and Malwarebytes (paid for).
More recently I swapped to Bitdefender (paid for) and like the added security features, such as limiting the ability to alter files in certain folders, etc.0 -

Controlled Folder Access is now also in Windows Defender Security Centre0 -
Agree, windows Defender is very adiquate, but I use free Avira as I also found Defender altered files in certain folders - too many false positive on select files that had no virus, other than that it worked very well.Frozen_up_north wrote: »I used to use Windows built in A/V and Malwarebytes (paid for).

I did not want to use controlled folder access, as I may pick stuff up, but i did not want stuff to vanish either.0 -
Interesting, no clear consensus one way or the other....{Signature removed by Forum Team}0

I just use Malwarebytes paid for on its own, seems to do the job touch wood not had a virus in years and I do visit some of the shadier sites on the www lol0

I doubt you'll ever get that.Interesting, no clear consensus one way or the other....
People will always say that, whatever they have installed is the best. It's not conceivable on the internet that you are the one who doesn't have the best of anything...:D
For the average home user (If there is such a thing), Windows Defender in W10 is more than enough.
That said, it must be run alongside a modicum of common sense. Without that, no AV is really any good.
