LVT is the way to go,
its used in many commercial settings like shops as it is tough and wears well.
feels warm, water resistant/proof.
you can get it in just about any pattern you want, there are companies that will make you custom print if you want.
wood look and stone are popular.
I looked at some stuff from these guys.

they had one that looked like steel flooring does not seem to be there now.0 -
We just use a piece of rug-sized polypropylene carpet (light brown!) in the porch, then in the utility area beyond is a cotton Dirttrapper Mat which can be washed, hosed-down or just shaken. We shake the carpet piece outside too, then hoover it with a Henry.
The Dirttrapper mats are good, but it's the poly carpet that takes the worst of the muck.
Thanks - when I read your original post, I was surprised it was wool - so not now surprised it's actually polyprop. I have a carpet in my current house like that, and was think to get something made for my new house doorway. I like the idea of something that is fixed, but can be removed for washing/brushing/Henry-ing.getmore4less wrote: »LVT is the way to go,

Wow, steel, I'd like to see that (just out of interest; pretty sure I wouldn't get it!) I have been looking at some LVT online that looks like Victorian tiling, and may go for that.(Nearly) dunroving0 -

I forgot where it had come from.
However, our living room carpet, which was 80% wool, also put up with horrendous abuse when we refurbished. It was 'only' concrete, plaster dust etc, but I was still amazed at the way it coped, at least as regards surface appearance.
But for country living, LVT is more hygienic. There are no hiding places for fleas etc either.0 -

it was a worn look all scratched, would look good in a very modern setting with an industrial feel, warehouse loft or a study or workshop/garage.
