Television Reception In France

I took an old portable TV over to France to use in our apartment and connected it to the apartment block communal aerial, which is 'plumbed in'.
Problem now is I can't pick up any French TV channels on it, although I know the outlet works as I have seen a TV working from it before we took the place over.
It's fine for playing DVDs, and I can even pick up very hazy UK television, but no French channels.
I'm assuming therefore that French television broadcasts on a different system to UK, which my old UK TV can't pick up.
Does anyone know anything about European TV broadcasting, or if there's anyway I a can get around this without popping into the local french hypermarket and buying a new TV?

Have tried retuning your TV?
France uses the SECAM colour TV standard, if you have a UK PAL colour TV then apparently it will display French channels but only in black and white. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
I can pick up a b&w image on some frequencies which I guess are french, but there is no 'hold' stability on them so they're not watchable. Perhaps I'll try ebay france for a 2nd hand set.0
