My daughter is selling her car and has a buyer but the car has her private plate on it.
She has a deposit down on a new car and wants to put the private plate on that.

How does she do all of this please?

She has the original V5 that came with her current car with its original reg on it. And she has another V5 for her current car, with her private reg on it.

She is planning to sell her car this weekend and we are unsure how best to go about all of this, can anyone advise please?

Edited to add, that we have the original number plates with the car!!!8217;s original reg, ready to put on before the car goes. The issue here, is we don!!!8217;t want to give the buyer the little slip from the bottom of the most recent V5 because in effect then, she is selling her car complete with the plate, if that makes sense?!

Thanks in advance!

The old V5, with the old plate, is useless. Bin it.

Transfer the "private" plate onto retention. Wait for the new V5C with the plate that'll be going with the car. That way, you can be sure that the plate won't be transferred with the keeper change. If she's planning on selling the car in a few days time, it's too late to do that, so there is a risk that the keeper change may go through with the "private" plate, so she would lose the right to it.

If the "new car" is a new car, simply give the retention certificate to the dealer before he registers it.

If it's a used car, including a pre-reg, then it's easiest to wait until she gets the V5C in her name, and transfer it on from retention.

She probably won't die too badly from having to drive around with a vanilla plate for a week or two.
