If it is a joist that needs replacing how much would it cost????:(

Can you push a doorkey into the skirting board? How much resistance is there? As much as you'd expect?

No Skirting board seems pretty solid

Is there a corresponding gap between the ceiling and wall in the room below? Has the carpet moved exposing a gap that was always there?

Yes the carpet has moved. I have posted a picture on Houzz of the room directly below. It appears there is a gap between the ceiling and wall in the room below .

You need a structural engineer. I think it could the outside wall pulling away and bulging. That's how you'd get gaps opening out above and below. It could need tying back in. Potentially an insurance job, but in the same situation, I'd ask for some verbal advice from a local structural engineer first before potentially affecting my premiums for no reason.

The photos aren't great but the wider shot of the room looks like the external wall is not true. It appears to curve.

In these situations, it's the wider context that is important, not the crack itself. I think I asked before, but you misunderstood. If you go outside the house, does that wall look totally straight or can you see any undulation in it?

Photo of it if you like, but it is a structural engineer that you need, in my opinion.

A failed joist results in the floor and ceiling moving up and down.
