How best to save / budget for home emergencies

I used a British Gas policy for a while to look after my boiler, radiators, etc but switched a few years back to another company.
I've pretty much decided that most years I've probably thrown good money after bad and so as the policy has doubled in price for next year I have decided to invest that sum into a savings / budget account to help pay for plumbers, etc ....
But my question is ... where should I put it? An instant access savers seems most suitable as it gives me easy access to the money when / if needed. But at the same time, it gives me too easy an access to the money and it may end up getting used for other things.
So how do you guys manage this or are you happy using folks like Homeserve, British Gas, etc... and you just re-negotiate the annual deal each year? Part of my question stems from the fact that a lot of the newer companies (i.e. cheaper) won't give me cover as my boiler is too old - in perfect health, just old so I thought I'd see what others do.
